Immersive Technologies has been announced as the recipient of an award to supply mining equipment simulators to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Office of Mining Safety and Health (OMSHR).
Following a public tender process for continuous miner simulators, NIOSH assessed the technology, product features, feasibility, supportability and price of multiple simulation providers. Based on this rigorous assessment, Immersive Technologies was the chosen bidder.
NIOSH intends to use their IM360 simulation platform and JOY 14CM15 Lightweight Remote Conversion Kit™ to determine what information continuous miner operators needs to do their job, when they need it, and how it is best presented.
“Usually our products are used to make mining equipment operators safer and more productive by allowing them to quickly build the required skills and knowledge. The use of our products by NIOSH for research highlights the high level of simulation fidelity and flexibility present, allowing NIOSH to safely and efficiently conduct their research while minimizing the need to burden mining operations,” says Richard Beesley, Underground Soft Rock - Business Unit Manager at Immersive Technologies.
Monitoring operators in a live mining environment can be incredibly difficult, both from a data collection, and a safety perspective.
“By using the patent pending RealMove™ technology only found in Immersive Technologies IM360 platform, NIOSH is able to not only monitor the continuous miner operator’s performance at their jobs, but exactly where they are standing when they do so. This is critical for assessing interaction with proximity systems and the dangers of the mining environment around them accurately,” Beesley says.
Immersive Technologies’ simulation based training solutions are in place at over 250 mine sites in 38 countries around the world.
NIOSH is an agency of the U.S. Federal Government responsible for surveillance, research and technology transfer related to the health and safety of workers. One of the program sectors within NIOSH is mining that is mainly composed of the Office of Mining Safety and Health (OMSHR). Through research and prevention OMSHR provides research findings and recommendations related to mining to the industry, regulatory agencies, and the scientific community.
Immersive Technologies will supply mining equipment simulators to The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) which is the U.S.federal agency that conducts research and makes recommendations to prevent worker injury and illness. NIOSH research is key to these efforts and provides practical solutions to identified problems.
